My series of little forest creatures is a celebration of the quiet delights that come from looking closely at growing things.

This piece came about when I was tending my mother’s garden this past summer. I noticed this delicate pink flower on a tangled vine. Curiously, I traced the vine back across and all around the garden bed until I ran into an eggplant growing lower down near the soil. Who knew that eggplant blossoms were so fancy?! The second I spotted this elegant little flower, an image popped into my head of a chipmunk wearing one as a floppy sun hat. And this chipmunk loves a theme, so his cape is also made from eggplant leaves. Aubergine (pronounced a bit like oh-bear-jean) is the French word for….you guessed it... eggplant!
