My series of little forest creatures is a celebration of the quiet delights that come from looking closely at growing things.

I think of my mom every time I see a dahlia. She has a truly magical green thumb, and over the years she has grown the most magnificent varieties--huge dinner plate dahlias in yellow, peach, magenta and burgundy. A few years ago, she and my stepdad left their dahlias, friends and community behind and moved all the way across the country to be close to us. As excited as they were to be just a few blocks away from their grandsons, the transition was still not an easy one for them. But they began tending a new garden here in difficult clay soil, in our unforgiving Rocky Mountain climate. It has been inspiring to watch them learn and adapt to their new lives in Montana, and to see the way that their flowers and vegetables thrive a bit more each growing season. This year their garden was full of beautiful magenta dahlias, including the one that modeled for this chipmunk’s fancy hat!
