Some Things That Fly There Be
Some Things That Fly There Be
Original Scratchboard and Acrylic Artwork
2018
This is one of a very few unsold works from what I fondly call my “human portrait series.” This body of work, created between 2012 and 2018, featured portraits drawn from found antique photographs interlaced with botanical elements. This period was significant in the development of my style and technique, as I was still just beginning to explore the combination of scratchboard drawing and acrylic painting.
This piece was part of a body of work that I created for a small group show at Radius Gallery in 2018. This series was my response to the 2016 United States presidential election. It was my way of working through my shock over the results, and to grapple with the deep moral divide revealed therein. My reference photos for the portraits came from data bases of Civil War era photographs, the birds were painted after Audubon’s “Birds of North America,” and the titles are lines from the poems of Emily Dickinson.
